Patrick Peterson's Time To Give Back
Feb 10, 2015
When Patrick Peterson steps on the field, he doesn’t like to give an inch to opposing wide receivers, but the Cardinals’ star cornerback was feeling much more generous on Monday night.
With an apron slipped over his neck and tied around his waist, Peterson served a four-course meal to dinner guests at his inaugural Celebs and Steaks Dinner at Donovan’s Chop and Steakhouse in Phoenix. Peterson was joined by coach Bruce Arians, team president Michael Bidwill and several teammates at the charity event.
The proceeds from the tickets and auctioned off memorabilia benefitted the Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success, aimed at improving the lives of underprivileged youth.
“Hopefully it’s going to get some great donations for the foundation to get it going in the right, positive direction,” Peterson said. “We’re definitely looking to help some kids that are in dire need of some help. It’s the first annual, and I’m very excited about it.”
The night began with a cocktail reception as the players and coaches mingled with guests before they were put to work as waiters. Autographed items from Cardinals and Diamondbacks players were on display for the silent auction before the dinner, and a live auction was held after.
Peterson helped out at a similarly-themed event put on by wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald as a rookie, which gave him the idea. Fitzgerald was among the Cardinals players in attendance, along with Tyrann Mathieu, Antonio Cromartie, Frostee Rucker, Lorenzo Alexander, Sam Acho, Calais Campbell, Carson Palmer, Dan Williams and Rashad Johnson. Cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross also helped out.
“It means a lot go have those guys out here, supporting not only me but the cause,” Peterson said. “I’m just happy to have those guys out here to spread some fun and happiness around here today.”

Patrick Peterson and the Foundation for Success Helping Children to Succeed
Feb 04, 2015
In September of 2014, Peterson and his Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success challenged 60 area schools to log more than 100,000 minutes of reading by the end of the semester. The children of San Marcos Elementary School in Chandler, AZ were the first to win the challenge and were rewarded with a pizza party from Papa John’s Pizza, along with Patrick and “Papa” John Schnatter, founder of Papa John’s, who flew in from Kentucky to attend the event.
Prior to the challenge, San Marcos Elementary School had been one of the poorest rated schools for literacy in the nation. Principal Becky Henderson announced that the children of San Marcos are now hovering about fourth place in the nation.
The auditorium was packed with children wearing their Arizona Cardinal jerseys and chanting “Patrick, Patrick, Patrick.” Peterson had visited the children of San Marcos in September challenging them to read and promising that the winner would have their very own Pizza Party hosted by Patrick and a special friend.
Patrick Peterson, true to his word, came to host the Pizza Party but also brought Papa John’s Pizza founder, John Schnatter, who ceremoniously donated a check to Patrick’s Foundation for Success in the amount of $58,000.00. Papa John’s had promised to donate $1.21 to the Foundation for Success for every pizza ordered when you mentioned “Patrick Peterson” with the order.
The impact that Patrick Peterson has had on the school’s children “has been phenomenal,” said one teacher. “We were able to get the children to log in all their hours prior to the Christmas break. Patrick’s commitment has inspired the children in ways we never could. It was also thrilling for us as educators to see him make a promise to the kids and more importantly keep it. We are extremely proud of the kids and their effort to win this challenge, they needed someone to believe in and it was nice to see them rewarded for it.”
In addition to the reading challenge, Peterson’s Foundation for Success has been building and maintaining libraries called “Patrick’s Corner” in Title I schools and inner city community centers to help keep at risk children reading.
For more information about Patrick Peterson, the Foundation for Success, and upcoming events including the Golf Tournament and the 2015 “Gearing Up” event to help students obtain the supplies they need for school, visit the Foundation’s website or keep your eyes right here at SmartFem online Magazine.

Arizona Cardinals' Patrick Peterson Celebrates Pick Up a Book Reading Challenge Winner with Papa John's Pizza Party
Feb 03, 2015
A program of the Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Feb. 3, 2015) – In the midst of the frenzy of Super Bowl weekend, Arizona Cardinals’ Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson made time for a visit to San Marcos Elementary School on Friday afternoon to celebrate with the victor of his Pick Up a Book Reading Challenge, a literacy initiative of his Foundation for Success.
“It is a really amazing feeling to be back at the school where I launched my challenge to celebrate these students as winners,” said Peterson. “It is so cool to think that it was my encouragement that motivated San Marcos Elementary School to win the challenge and that these kids found a love for reading, which is such an important part of success.”
In an effort to bring families, schools and communities together to promote children’s literacy development, Patrick Peterson and his Foundation for Success kicked off the school year with its Pick Up a Book Reading Challenge in early September at San Marcos Elementary School.
Peterson challenged 60 local Phoenix schools to each read a combined 100,000 minutes this fall. Students logged their individual reading minutes online throughout the semester. The school with the highest number of combined reading minutes would earn a school-wide pizza party with Peterson, sponsored by Papa John’s.
More than 500 San Marcos Elementary School students gathered with Peterson on Friday afternoon at a school-wide Papa John’s Pizza Party to celebrate their hard work of reading the highest number of combined minutes. With a total of 524,787 minutes, San Marcos Elementary School ranked fourth in the national Scholastic READ 100,000 program.
“The students enjoyed the pizza party with Patrick Peterson and Papa John,” said San Marcos Elementary Principal Becky Henderson. “Earlier in the year, Patrick motivated the students to read, and our school was the first to reach 100,000 minutes of reading! Patrick fulfilled his promise to return to the school and gave every student a pizza party.”
Papa John’s Founder, Chairman, President and CEO John Schnatter also presented a $58,000 check to the Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success as a result of a partnership throughout the season. When customers ordered the Patrick Peterson Special online with the promotional code “PATRICK,” $1.21 of each order was donated to the Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success.

Cardinals' Peterson scores with young Chandler readers
Sep 12, 2014
"Patrick! Patrick! Patrick!" The San Marcos Elementary School gym rang with anticipation as students chanted the name of one of their heroes, impatiently awaiting his arrival.
Arizona Cardinals All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson showed up to thunderous applause and cheering for the launch of his "Pick Up a Book Challenge," aimed at promoting reading in Arizona schools.
"It was almost louder than last night when they were chanting my name," Peterson said, laughing after the event, comparing the students to the crowd at Monday's victory over the San Diego Chargers.
His charity, the Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success, is challenging about 60 area schools to each log more than 100,000 minutes of reading by the end of the semester. Whichever school wins the competition is promised a pizza party with Peterson and a surprise guest he said will be named later.
Peterson addressed the crowd of students, parents and faculty, many of whom wore Cardinals jerseys. After reading the audience a story with one of the students, he answered questions and reminded students to work hard in school and listen to their parents.
"The kids were excited all day long. We could hardly contain them whatsoever," San Marcos Principal Becky Henderson said. "They were so excited to see him. We're Cardinals fans through and through because that's how we build school spirit, so it was nice to hear him speak, and to see him was amazing."
Peterson grew up with four siblings, so he said he enjoys the opportunity to work with children.
"Literacy is definitely a struggle here," Peterson said. "Obviously, we want to catch that at a young age. We want to catch that now instead of later."
Scholastic, among the world's largest publishers of children's books, is helping with the campaign and has worked on other philanthropic activities with the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders, regional field manager Chuck Sherwood said.
"This is our first venture with an individual player setting up a challenge, and for the schools of Chandler it's an exciting opportunity," Sherwood said. "I think this community needs this kind of support, and it's awesome to have a player step up and challenge the kids in this manner."
